Abraham and the Wisdom of the Egyptians

Many individuals, after becoming aware of their Israelite heritage, begin to abhor anything outside of themselves considered to be pagan/heathen, which is understandable but still an error in judgment. The Israelites have been strangers in many lands throughout the course of their history. As a result of this history, the Israelites have inherited many things while dwelling within other nations—some good things and some bad things. While in Egypt, the Israelites at one time became the most populous people in the land made many significant contributions to Egypt. It is recorded in the biblical record that the Most High God, I AM, commanded the Israelites not to abhor the Egyptians.

“… thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian; because thou wast a stranger in his land.” – Deuteronomy 23:7

Although the Egyptians were pagans, the Israelites, while living in Egypt, learned a lot of the wisdom of Egypt. The knowledge that the Israelites acquired while in Egypt would help the Israelites and their descendants establish dominant civilizations outside of Egypt during their various migrations. Moses is a prime example of the Israelites possessing the knowledge of the Egyptians.

And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.” – Acts 7:22

Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians but what actually was the wisdom of Egypt? At the foundation of the legendary wisdom of Egypt was the development of the arts & sciences the Ancestor of the Israelites introduced this wisdom to Egypt. It would seem that Abraham was sent to Egypt, as part of the Most High’s plan, to set the foundation of the wisdom that would later empower his descendants in their quest to the land that promised to Abraham. Without Abraham, Egypt would not have achieved the mastery in the art & sciences that allowed for the development of such high culture as exemplified by Egypt and much later, the Greeks. Josephus affirms this assertion by that,

He [Abraham] communicated to them arithmetic, and delivered to them the science of astronomy; for, before Abram came into Egypt, they were unacquainted with those parts of learning; for that science came from the Chaldeans into Egypt, and from thence to the Greeks also.” – The Works of Flavius Josephus, the Learned and Authentic Jewish Historian, By Flavius Josephus, PG 39

Abraham from Ur of the Chaldeans (Babylon)

Jasher 12:15-17, 25-31 makes it clear that Abraham, after leaving Haran, learned the Hebrew language before he entered into the land of Canaan and Egypt. It is also interesting to note that Abraham, after learning Hebrew, studied the books written in Hebrew by his forefathers for 6 months. It was this information, which contained pre-flood wisdom, that Abraham introduced to Egypt.

A modern historian, Annette Reed, also examines the contributions Abraham made to classical civilizations, and the title of her dissertation labels Abraham as a ‘Chaldean Scientist”. The information she cites from Josephus and other writers clearly demonstrates an Enochian origin of Astronomy/Astrology/Mathematics but also posits a Babylonian, through Abraham, for the wisdom of Egypt.

Summary – This article analyzes Josephus’ approach to Abraham and astronomy/astrol-ogy in Ant. 1.154-168. This retelling of Genesis 12 describes Abraham as inferring the one-ness of God from the irregularity of the stars, thereby implying his rejection of “the Chaldean science” for Jewish monotheism. Soon after, however, Josephus posits that the patriarch transmitted astron- omy/astrology to Egypt, appealing to the positive connotations of this art for apologetic aims. Towards explaining the tension between these two traditions, I first map the range of early Jewish traditions about Abraham and the stars, and then consider the Hellenistic discourse about astral wis-dom as the domain of ancient “barbarian” nations, as it shaped Hellenistic Jewish traditions that celebrate Abraham’s astronomical/astrological skill. I conclude with Josephus’ own cultural context, proposing that the atti-tudes towards astronomy/astrology among his Roman contemporaries may help to account for the ambivalence in his characterization of Abraham as both Chaldean scientist and father of the Jews.” – Abraham as Chaldean Scientist and Father of the Jews, by Annette Yoshiko Reed

‘[Orpheus tells Musaes about God, that no one can see Him; for around [Him] a cloud has been fixed… Except a certain unique man, by descent an offshoot of the Chaldeans. For he was knowledgeable about the path of the Star, and the movements of the spheres around the earth, and in a circle regularly, but each on its own axis. [This Chaldean, Abraham, understood] how He guides the winds [that is, spirits, subsidiary forces] around both air and water.’ – Psudeo-Orphica (Recension B) vv. 21, 27-31 (cited in Clement of Alexandria, Miscellanies 124)

Notice the geocentric (Ptolemaic) cosmological model. Everything revolves around the still Earth.

Abraham excelled all in nobility and wisdom; he sought and obtained the knowledge of astrology and the Chaldean craft, and pleased God because he eagerly sought to be reverent. At God’s command, he traveled to Phoenicia the cycles of the sun and moon, and everything else as well… [Later, when he was in Egypt,] Abraham lived in Heliopolis with the Egyptian priests and taught them much: He explained astrology and the other sciences to them. – [Pseudo-] Eupolemus (cited in Eusebius, Praeparatio Evangelica 9.17:3-4, 8)

So again, according to Josephus:

He [Abraham] communicated to them arithmetic, and delivered to them the science of astronomy; for, before Abram came into Egypt, they were unacquainted with those parts of learning; for that science came from the Chaldeans into Egypt, and from thence to the Greeks also.” – The Works of Flavius Josephus, the Learned and Authentic Jewish Historian …, By Flavius Josephus, PG 39

Strength in Numbers Mathematics

Science came from the Chaldeans into Egypt, because Abraham was a Chaldean. However, it should be CLEARLY understood that the science of the Chaldeans, as advanced as it was, was only the beginning of Abraham’s wisdom because it was actually Noah and Shem who instructed him further in the true science and the knowledge/worship of the Most High God (Jasher 9:5-6, 19, Exodus 6:3).

And when Abram came out from the cave, he went to Noah and his son Shem, and he remained with them to learn the instruction of the Lord and his ways, and no man knew where Abram was, and Abram served Noah and Shem his son for a long time. And Abram was in Noah’s house thirty-nine years, and Abram knew the Lord from three years old, and he went in the ways of the Lord until the day of his death, as Noah and his son Shem had taught him… And Abram said unto himself Surely these are not gods that made the earth and all mankind, but these are the servants of God, and Abram remained in the house of Noah and there knew the Lord and his ways’ and he served the Lord all the days of his life, and all that generation forgot the Lord, and served other gods of wood and stone, and rebelled all their days.” – Jasher 9:5-6, 19

It is important to note that both Shem and his father Noah (302 years older than Shem) experienced life before the flood and were 2 of only 8 people to survive through the flood while living upon the Ark with all of creation God chose to save. Moreover, Noah, who instructed his son Shem, was instructed by his father Lamech and his grandfather Methuselah (Jasher 5:6-11, 22-36) who was the son of Enoch who was the first to learn writing and the paths of the luminaries of Heaven. All of this wisdom, from Enoch to Noah and Shem, was taught to Abraham after he left the land he was born in. Basically, Abraham became the new Grandmaster and keeper of the pure heavenly wisdom and he was entrusted with the mystery knowledge. Shem was the annointed keeper of this wisdom and strict order of discipline and dedication to the Most High God under the title and Order of Melchizedek (Genesis 14:18-20, Jasher 16: 11-12) and he instructed and blessed Abraham.

Remembering that Abraham did originally come from Chaldea, the question remains, who were the Chaldeans?

Chaldea or Chaldaea was a small Semitic nation which emerged between the late 10th and early 9th century BC, surviving until the mid 6th century BC, after which it disappeared, and the Chaldean tribes were absorbed into the native population of Babylonia.” – Chaldea, Wikipedia

Abrahams father Terah was a Chaldean who was the second in command under Nimrod, much like Joseph was in command after Pharaoh.

And he placed Terah the son of Nahor the prince of his host, and he dignified him and elevated him above all his princes. And whilst he was reigning according to his heart’s desire, after having conquered all his enemies around, he advised with his counselors to build a city for his palace, and they did so. And they found a large valley opposite to the east, and they built him a large and extensive city, and Nimrod called the name of the city that he built Shinar, for the Lord had vehemently shaken his enemies and destroyed them.” – Jasher 7:41-43

Medieval torre de Babel

After Nimrod elevated Terah above all the other princes he then established the city of Shinar by advice of his councilors. Could Nimrods counselors have been aware an ancient mathematics and architecture that would allow them to advise Nimrod in ancient urban planning? The Tower of Babel, which was constructed under Nimrod’s command, was clearly the product of architecture and mathematics.

Egerton-Genesis-Picture-Book-ff.-5v-The-story-of-Nimrod02Egerton-Genesis-Picture-Book-ff.-5v-The-story-of-Nimrod01It is very interesting to note that according to, An Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and Its Kindred Sciences, Volume 2 (1912) by Albert Mackey, Nimrod is considered to be one of the founders of the Craft, Freemasonry, and was also a Mason himself. It is through Masonry that the ancient Tower of Babel was constructed:PG 513, An Encyclopedia of Freemasonry and Its Kindred Sciences, Volume 2 (1912) by Albert MackeyIn regards to Abraham’s mathematical and astronomical knowledge that he later imparted to the Egyptians, we find that not only was his father Terah the highly favored second in command after Nimrod but that he was also an idolater and a maker of idols (Joshua 24:2, Jasher 12:42-61). Clearly, Terah must have also been familiar with the mathematics and Masonry required to make the idols that he, Nimrod and all of the hosts of Nimrods kingdom worshipped. Terah understood how to “Square the Compass,” a knowledge necessary to construct the Tower of Babel. Abram/Abraham, one of the sons of Terah, was also familiar with this same knowledge and in fact surpassed the understanding of the Tower of Babel through his acknowledgment of the Creator of the Universe that lies beyond Infinity.

And Terah his father was in those days, still captain of the host of king Nimrod, and he still followed strange gods. And Abram came to his father’s house and saw twelve gods standing there in their temples, and the anger of Abram was kindled when he saw these images in his father’s house… And Abram asked his father, saying, Father, tell me where is God who created heaven and earth, and all the sons of men upon earth, and who created thee and me. And Terah answered his son Abram and said, Behold those who created us are all with us in the house. And Abram said to his father, My lord, shew them to me I pray thee; and Terah brought Abram into the chamber of the inner court, and Abram saw, and behold the whole room was full of gods of wood and stone, twelve great images and others less than they without number.

And there was not a man found in those days in the whole earth, who knew the Lord (for they served each man his own God) except Noah and his household, and all those who were under his counsel knew the Lord in those days.” – Jasher 9:7-10

But that which is made with hands is cursed, as well it, as he that made it: he, because he made it; and it, because, being corruptible, it was called god. For the ungodly and his ungodliness are both alike hateful unto God. For that which is made shall be punished together with him that made it. Therefore even upon the idols of the Gentiles shall there be a visitation: because in the creature of God they are become an abomination, and stumblingblocks to the souls of men, and a snare to the feet of the unwise. For the devising of idols was the beginning of spiritual fornication, and the invention of them the corruption of life.” – Wisdom of Solomon 14:8-12

It is interesting to note that Nimrod himself was credited with the construction of a very special idol. The Chronicles of Jerahmeel contains a record of the Israelites finding seven golden bejeweled statues that belonged to the Amorites but were originally constructed by seven different extraordinary sinners—one of them being Nimrod.

Then the sons of Gad said, ‘We have lain with the wives of our neighbours.’ And the sons of Asher said, ‘We found seven golden idols, which the Amorites called “The holy ones of Ninfe,”; and upon them were many precious stones. We hid them beneath Mount Shechem. Send thither now and thou wilt find them.’ He acted accordingly and found them. These were the idols which informed the Amorites at certain periods the deeds they should perform. Now, these are the names of the seven sinners that made them after the Flood: Canaan, Phut, Shelaḥ, Nimrod, Elah, Diul, and Shuaḥ. Nor was their work like that of ordinary artificers. The precious stones they brought from Havilah, where the bdellium and the onyx are found. These were the stones used by the Amorites for their idols. In the night they shone as the light of day, and when the blind Amorites kissed the idols and touched their eyes they could see. Kenaz then placed them in a ward until he knew what was to become of them. – Chronicles of Jerahmeel 56:13-14, The Legend of Kenaz

Nimrod was able to create an idol of such fine craftsmanship that the record considered his skill to be ‘extra-ordinary’. Nimrod must have possessed a superior mathematical and astronomical/astrological knowledge (as well as the tools) in order to create this type of idol. A special feature of the idols was that it allowed the user to receive instructions and spiritual guidance from the celestial/spiritual realm. Some of this particular knowledge is discussed in the Squaring the Circle blog. A biblical word used to describe these types of idols is Teraphim.

idol teraphim

These idols are known as Teraphim. Teraphim are objects or images used as talismans or used for oracular purposes.

In the 1963 film, Jason and the Argonauts, the statue of Hera was often consulted for guidance. The masthead of the Argonaut ship was also an idol of Hera that Jason used to consult for information concerning his voyage and what he deeds he should do.

“…the “teraphim” were fashioned after the human form—hence Michal’s selection of one of these to appear like the figure of her sleeping husband. Ezek. 21:21 also makes it clear that the “teraphim” were used for oracular consultation—“The king of Babylon… consulted with teraphim.” Later scriptures indicate that after Israel had apostatized from Jehovah they turned to the “teraphim” more and more—“For the teraphim have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain.”” – GLEANINGS IN GENESIS, By ARTHUR W. PINK, PG 275

In order to create these Teraphim, the idol makers during Terah and Abrahams time had to use mathematics–geometry. Geometry and astrology are linked. Geometry and Astrology are linked because through specific geometric measurements, the spirits in high celestial places can be bound into physical objects. For this reason, the figurines of idolatry constructed using this specific math/geometry can be consulted like tarot cards of the astrological zodiac signs of the wheel of fortune.

Astrology is purely a mathematical science, and geometry is one of the basic principles of mathematics.” – Stowe’s Bible Astrology: The Bible Founded on Astrology, By Lyman E. Stowe, PG 171

Geometry included both elementary geometry as we know it, and ‘geography’ the description of the earth and its lands; both subjects could be called ‘earth-measurement’, the literal meaning of ‘geometry’.” – A History of Western Astrology, By S. J. Tester, PG 102

The foundation of his [Johannes Kepler’s] astrology was geometry and, more widely, a universal harmony present in geometry, as demonstrated in Tertius Interveniens: “Within this lower world a spiritual nature is concealed that can operate through geometry, which is vitalized through the geometrical and harmonic connections…”; “The geometry or harmony of aspects is not between the stars in the sky, but is located rather down here on earth in the point that collects all their rays.” This principle led him to his specific contributions to astrology, among which are: his analysis of planetary interrelationships through Platonic solids” – The Astrology Book: The Encyclopedia of Heavenly Influences, By James R. Lewis, PG 383

This is connected with the fact that at the height of Egyptian civilization, four branches of knowledge were especially cultivated in their ancient form: geometry, astrology, arithmetic, and music. In contemplating the heavenly element that formed the human body out of the earth, the Egyptians imagined that this body is molded in its special form according to the law of geometry; it is subject to the influences of the stars according to the laws of astrology… In the human being as a product of the earth, in this mummified man, the Egyptians saw the result of geometry, astrology, arithmetic, and music.” – Materialism and the Task of Anthroposophy, By Rudolf Steiner, PG 332

The Greek philosophers Plato, Aristotle, Pythagoras, and Euclid studied the proportion Phi (1/1.618) known as the Phi ratio and felt that beautiful creations respected certain geometrical laws displaying harmony. It is not known when the Phi ratio was first described or applied but it has always existed in the fields of mathematics and physics. Because the Greek sculptor Phidias used that proportion so much, it was called Phi, the Greek letter for the first part of his name. This proportion was also described by Leonardo Fibonacci of Pisa, in his development of mathematical sequences. Leonardo da Vinci called it the “golden proportion” and used it in Vetruvian Man.” – Body Contouring and Liposuction: Expert Consult – Online, By J. Peter Rubin, Mark L. “The second difference between algebra and geometry is that geometry is a mathematically precise way of visualizing universal, or cosmic, harmony… geometry describes the structures, forms, and transformations in an ordered and harmonious universe on many levels, from the molecular to the cosmic.” – Nurturing the Souls of Our Children, By Robert Mitchell, PG 118

This law of geometric harmony holds as true among the arts of man as in those realms which are the arts of God. Every building is geometric demonstration. As we may read in the pages of a learned student of this: “ The language (geometry) spoke in the sloping wall and massive pillar and flat roof of Egypt, or in the mighty piles of Chaldea, or in the Corinthian grace, or in Roman boldness; the heart was that of the geometrician who spoke as he dreamed, in anger, in epic, in poetry of stone and graceful curve—who planned by the plumb and the square, by the secret of the arch and the balance of accurate measure.” – The Builder: A Journal for the Masonic Student, Volume 4, PG 161

phi_logo

This Phi mathematics is also used in Temples and other building structures besides sculptures. Obviously, Nimrod and Terah were Teraphim worshippers. At the same time that they were worshipping Teraphim, Nimrod was building the city Shinar and the Tower of Babel. This advanced mathematics, based on astrology and astronomy, must have been used to build the tower of babel as well as the ancient cities. Modern, urban planning must have its roots in ancient mathematics and civilization, starting in Babylon after the flood.

An influential architect of the modern era, Le Corbusier, was aware of the ancient origins of architecture and urban planning and it’s relationship with astrology/astronomy. He incorporated these classical ideas into his modern work and helped pioneer the modern architecture movement.

le_corbusierCharles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, who was better known as Le Corbusier (October 6, 1887 – August 27, 1965), was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of the pioneers of what is now called modern architecture…His career spanned five decades, with his buildings constructed throughout Europe, India, and America.

le_corbusier_plan_voisin_01urban planning model

Le Corbusier was modernism’s preeminent design writer. His Towards a New Architecture, found on the shelf of every Anglo-American designer and architect after its translation in 1927, seemed a Mosaic tablet full of resonant commandments ready for textual interpretation by enthusiastic disciples… Le Corbusier discovered a universal ‘language of man’ in the logical precepts of classical geometry. ‘All men have the same organism, the same functions… the same needs’ he wrote. ‘Deep within us and beyond our senses’ exists ‘a resonance, a sort of sounding-board’ vibrating with the ‘geometrical truths’ of ‘axes, circles, right angles’… Le Corbusier offered a cool portrayal of design based on universal geometric harmony discovered by the Greeks, submerged during centuries of ignorance and finally rediscovered during the machine age.” – Writing Design: Words and Objects, edited by Grace Lees-Maffe, PG 27-28

Le-Corbusier-A-City-of-Towers1

Negro music has touched America because it is the melody of the soul joined with the rhythm of the machine. It is in two part time; tears in the heart; movement of the legs, torso arms and head. The music of the era of construction; innovating. It floods the body and heart; it floods the USA and its floods the world. The jazz is more advanced than the architecture. If architecture were at the point reached by jazz, it would be an incredible spectacle.”  – Le Corbusier

TrumpetMan_8x2_72dpi_RGB-1339681536 1981 garibaldi_the-get-down

Le corbusier’s cool portrayal of design based on universal geometric harmony discovered by the Greeks, is related to the harmony found in the Musica universalis or the Music/Harmony of the Spheres. This Philosophical and mathematical concept is used to reflect the harmonic movements of the celestial bodies in things terrestrial – particularly music. However, music is based on mathematical principals and these mathematical principals apply to the construction of any physical structure being that all physical creation is based is a product of audible vibration—music. Music, temples buildings and even cities can be constructed under these principles in order to dictate the flows of energy, especially when Phi-based mathematics (sacred geometry) is employed.

This is why different cities, towns, borough, province, state, or nation has a different “vibe” (vibration) to it based on the energy it conducts/resonates.

Just like the Teraphim can be used to trap/bind demons in a specific area, to be used for specific purposes, so can any other structure, that is fashioned using Phi, also have the possibility to host certain energies/spirits. As above, so below:

But why should the ancients have sought to create a simulacrum of the skies on the ground at Giza? Or, to put the question another way, why should they have sought to bring down to earth an image of the heavens?… Whosoever shall make a copy thereof… it shall act as a magical protector for him both in heaven an upon earth.” – The Giza Death Star.
